philosophy , literature and music in Europe. The importance given to the Church and monarchy had
comparatively reduced and art was now seen as the ‘expression of the people’ and not as a ‘forced
representation of the Almighty ‘. Protestant Churches were highly against this philosophy but this
did not stop poets like Christopher Marlowe and Geoffrey Chaucer and painters like Donatello and
Da Vinci use their thoughts as paint and the world as empty canvas. Questions were now
encouraged and there was a ‘rebirth’ of culture which was welcomed .
But after so many years one questions the connection between religion and art . And there is an
answer- both are creations of the human brain. Post World War II, faith was something that wasn’t
in abundance. People found art to be the perfect remedy to deal with trauma. Art movements like
Abstract Expressionism, Colour field painting, Pop art, Op art, Hard-edge painting, Minimal art,
Lyrical Abstraction, Fluxus, Happening, Video art, Postminimalism and Photorealism were taking
the rounds in Europe. More than religion, people wanted to restore their faith in a higher power; not
a specific god but in spirituality as whole. Theatre, visual art, music, poetry and literature helped
them escape the stressful and traumatic world and helped them see life in a whole new way. Now, in
the 21st century, art is being censored because some believe that it goes against the very essence of
religion and insults its origin. But one unfortunately forgets that freedom of expression is what
maintains a balance between religion and art, for there is a fine line between them.
