Fans and experts alike await the final squads for the national teams, but judging from the various

options the coaches have, the predicted winners of the group stages are:

Though the World Cup is still months away, the drama that usually begins with it, seems to precede
it this time. Thirty-three-year-old Paulo Guerrero, captain of the Peru national team, was suspended
from world football for a year due to testing positive for cocaine after the qualifier game against
Argentina. His ban has recently been reduced to merely six months, allowing him to play from May
onwards, which means, if reselected, he will get to represent his country in the World Cup.
Joachim Low, Germany’s head coach, warns his top tier team not to underestimate their opponents
due to their own outstanding form, and to not be their own enemies. Germany won the
confederations cup in Russia earlier this year, beating Chile in a tight final.
Former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, Angel Maria Villar, claims that the
Spanish national team may lose its place at the FIFA World Cup in case of failure of the RFEF to
manage their affairs independently, and ensure that their own affairs are not influenced by any third
parties (regarding the firing and court cases of Angel Maria Villar himself), though the La Liga
president, Javier Tebas and Spanish Secretary of State for Sports, Jose Ramon Lete, are convinced
otherwise.

We look forward to 14th June, 2018, the day of the first game, when Russia faces Saudi Arabia, and
the day friendships sprout from enmity, and rivalries spring up from club team-mates, the time of
