Introduction
The future is exciting. This is partly because of the gripping and crucial world of technology,
which accomplishes feats our forefathers could only have imagined. It is also partly because of the
deranged, creative, magical and defining universe of fashion. Perhaps surprisingly, the fields of
fashion and technology form a dangerous alliance. They are the Bonny and Clyde of this century,
and we can only anticipate their next strike. Before the industrial revolution, fashion was an elitist
concept. Moving into this century the word 'fashion' continues to have a frivolous connotation, and
for many, signifies a disconnection from the direr aspects of society. The invention of the sewing
machine and building of textile plants ushered in the trend of fast fashion. The commercial, mass
produced apparels that fly all over the world. Couture, or custom-made perfectly fit clothes became
luxury and so did their price tags. Now e-commerce -consumption using the internet from our
miniscule gadgets- has started the next big revolution. So, you see, fashion and technology grew
together and still continue to define human culture and identity together.
Once more we are witnessing a special phase of this dual metamorphosis. Iris Van Herpen sent the
