discussion with the entire group of JAM members. These discussions explored the many aspects
and problems that come with confidentiality.
The third session was based on the movie, ‘Tuesdays with Morrie.’ This movie followed the story of
a dying university professor and his ex-student. Discussions took place during, as well as after the
movie, about the themes and ideas in the movie that aligned with a student’s duty as a JAM
member.
The fourth session, on the following day, was about the value of empathy. For this, each group was
given situations, and these were discussed internally, as well as with the entire mass of students. The
arguments here were stimulating and thought-provoking.
The fifth session dealt with basic mentoring skills. This session was the longest, but the most
comprehensive, and critical, featuring role-plays, activities and discussions, making it interactive,
engaging and enlightening.
The sixth session was for the JAM members to reflect on all that they had learned, and to
incorporate their new knowledge and skills. For this session, each group was given a situation
which they had to evaluate. Similar to the previous sessions, the discussion here took place among
groups, along with the larger group. The discussion here demonstrated how much the students had
learned and observed.
The final session was about interpreting situations and making decisions. Here, once again, the
students were required to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding as they participated in
activities, which eventually ended with each group performing a small skit. This skit delved into
many themes and conflicts, but were all resolved by establishing the importance of JAM in our
school community.
JAM camp was a unique and mind-opening experience for students of all ages across both the
schools, and was appreciated by all, students and teachers alike. Personally, for me, this was an
amazing experience. As this is my third year being a JAM member, I’ve been for a couple of JAM
camps before, and this time was just as illuminating. Each year, I’ve observed, JAM camp just gets
better. And I can’t wait to see what the Well-Being Centre has in store for us next year.
