It was not in Adolf Hitler’s modus operandi to watch silently while attacks threatened his ultimate
desire for the global supremacy of his Third Reich. Hitler’s SS, widely known for its unpitying
brutality, tortured suspected resistance members with a vast majority of them ending up dead or
shipped off to inhumane concentration camps. Entire villages were razed to dust to send a message
to defaulters as in the case of the village of Oradour-sur-Glane where 614 people were left dead (the
men were shot, while the women and children were burnt to death in a church). The Nazis carried
out retribution operations against blameless victims and ruled with a merciless iron-fist. On 31st
January 1943, The Milices were constituted under the leadership of Joseph Darnad by the Vichy
government. This organization was established to ensure the supremacy of the Axis powers in
France and to protect the German occupation and it reached a membership of 20,000 by the climax
of the Second World War.
The determination and active participation of the fighters, who conducted nearly 1000 sabotage
attacks, greatly paid off in the days and weeks ultimately culminating in D-day. Without the
persistent efforts of the French Resistance workers, who used every method possible to free their
motherland from the corrupting clutches of Hitler and Nazi Germany, the course of the Second
World War might have been completely altered.
Despite massive losses incurred upon the French civilians, the defiant spirits of the French
continued unhampered, tenacious, and unrelenting, marching towards their violent, blood ridden
freedom.
